AUBURN, Ala. (December 3, 2005) - Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) and Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) both advanced to the final rounds of the U.S. Open Championships as the Huskies competed in the third day of events in Auburn.
Acquavito placed 22nd in the heats with a time of 2:31.94 to move him on to the ‘C’ finals of the 200 breaststroke. He swam over two seconds faster in the final to finish in sixth place (2:29.32).
DeVinney was the lone Husky to advance to a ‘B’ final in the three-day competition. Her time of 2:21.16 was good for 16th place in the 200 butterfly heats. In the final, DeVinney captured fifth place with a time of 2:19.13.
Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.) was the final of three Huskies to compete in an individual event in the last day of action. Kearns’ 9:26.73 finish in the 800 freestyle ranked her 33rd overall in the finals.
Both the men’s and women’s teams competed in the 4 X 100 freestyle relay to end the meet. DeVinney and Kearns were, once again, joined by Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.) and Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) where they placed 16th (4:10.62). Making up the men’s team was Acquavito, Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.), Tim Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.) and John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.). The four combined for a 13th place finish in the relay with a time of 3:43.53.
The Huskies will return to action when they travel on their annual training trip scheduled from January 2-15. This year’s destination is Hawaii.
