Swimming Finishes Second Day of Events at U.S. Open

AUBURN, Ala. (December 2, 2005) - The second day of competition at the U.S. Open Championships saw the Huskies in seven different events with two individuals making the finals.
Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) started things off again for UConn as she competed in the 100 backstroke. Smith finished in 23rd place in the heats in 1:06.50. She advanced to the 'C' finals of the event where her time of 1:06.79 was good for seventh place.
Both Tim Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.) and John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.) made their first individual appearances of the meet in the 100 butterfly. Jones' heat time of 59.07 placed him in 39th. Dasinger came in shortly behind Jones in 1:00.41 which was good for 44th place overall.
The Huskies had representatives in both the men's and women's 400 IM in Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.) and Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.). Kearns completed the event in 5:14.79 ranking her 42nd in the heats. McNulty's time of 4:44.34 was good for 20th place and a trip to the 'C' finals where he finished in fifth place (4:41.51).
Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) and Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.) joined Smith and Kearns in the 4 X 100 medley relay. Karel anchored the final leg of the relay touching the wall at 4:41.08 and sealing an 18th place finish for the team.
Ending the night for the Huskies was the men's 4 X 100 medley relay team. Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) combined with Dasinger, Jones and McNulty to finish in 12th place with a time of 4:04.84.
UConn will continue competition at the final day of events for the U.S. Open Championships tomorrow morning beginning at 9:30. In addition, the diving team will compete at the Rutgers Super Splash with events running throughout the day.
