Julius James (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad) has been named a First Team All-American by College Soccer News, while teammate O’Brian White (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada) was selected to the First Team All-Freshman squad. Both members of the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team were integral in the school’s run for the BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships, as well as an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
James played and started in all 21 games, helping anchor the nationally-ranked defense that allowed an average of just 0.56 goals per game, while posting 14 shutouts. Powered by the sophomore defender, the Huskies gave up just two goals at home during the regular season and 12 overall. Across the grain, he scored two goals, one against George Mason (9/9) and another on the road vs. Notre Dame (10/8). James adds the First Team All-American nod to a lengthy list of accolades this season, including NSCAA Second Team All-American and First Team New England honors. He was named the BIG EAST Defender of the Year, as well as a candidate for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy.
White, too, has received numerous accolades for a breakout freshman campaign. The BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and All-BIG EAST Second Team member, the freshman forward led the Huskies in scoring with 28 points off shared team highs of 10 goals and eight assists. He started and played in 20 games, averaging 73 minutes per appearance. White earned conference Rookie of the Week honors during the week of Oct. 24, after scoring two goals against Pittsburgh (10/19).
The UConn Huskies finished the year ranked ninth in the country with a record of 16-3-2 and will return 23 letterwinners, including both James and White, to a team poised for success in the 2006 season.
