UConn Swimmers Compete at U.S. Open Championships

AUBURN, Ala. (December 1, 2005) - Eight members of the University of Connecticut swim team competed on the first day of events at the U.S. Open Championship held at the University of Auburn.
Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) started things off for the Huskies in the 200 IM where she finished in 45th place with a time of 2:25.97. Later in the morning, Smith placed 31st in the 200 backstroke in 2:23.83.
Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.) swam the 200 IM for UConn finishing in 27th place with a time of 2:12.67.
Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) qualified for the ‘C’ Final in the 100 breaststroke with a heat time of 1:07.57. In the final, Acquavito captured third place in 1:07.22.
Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.), Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.), Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) and Smith joined together to represent the Huskies in the women’s 4 X 200 freestyle relay. The team completed the event in 9:02.92 which was good for 11th place.
On the men’s side, McNulty and Acquavito were joined by Tim Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.) and John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.) in their 4 X 200 freestyle relay where they placed 14th with a time of 8:19.75.
The Huskies will resume competition tomorrow morning at 9:30 with the start of the second day’s preliminaries.
