Swimming and Diving Completes Competition at Terrapin Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (November 19, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Terrapin Cup today with the women finishing the three-day invitational in first place (889) and the men finishing in third (728).
Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.) enjoyed another successful day at the Cup with a third place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.37. Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) and Ryan Thompson (Branford, Conn.) finished back-to-back in the 200 breaststroke where their times of 2:05.69 and 2:07.12 were good for fourth and fifth place, respectively. The Huskies posted another four-five finish in the 200 butterfly with Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) touching the wall at 1:51.42 and Tim Jones (Jacksonville, Fla.) coming in behind at 1:52.52. T.J. Ferguson's (Plainville, Conn.) score of 483.85 placed him second in the three meter dive.
The women's team saw three first-place finishes in the final day of competition. Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.), Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) and Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario) posted a time of 3:28.79 in the 400 free relay. Katie DeVinney's (Avondale, Ariz.) time of 2:04.88 was good for the win in the 200 butterfly. Smith continued her winning ways with a time of 2:02.17 in the 200 backstroke. Coming in behind Smith in fourth and fifth place were Audrey Prior (Lutz, Fla.) and Juliet Paradine (Garden City, N.Y.) with times of 2:05.74 and 2:06.35, respectively. Karel placed fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.99. Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.) completed the 1650 freestyle in 16:53.58 which was good for third.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, December 2 as they travel to the U.S. Open Championships. The meet will take place in Auburn, Ala. The diving teams will compete at the Rutgers Diving Invitational in Piscataway, N.J. on Saturday, December 3.
