Volleyball Defeats South Florida, 3-0

TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 30) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team defeated South Florida, 3-0 (30-16, 30-25, 33-31) on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UConn improves to 12-12 overall on the season and 4-6 against BIG EAST competition while South Florida is 3-18 overall and 1-10 in the conference.
UConn came out strong in the first game of the match, winning the first three points. The Huskies opened up a 15-9 lead midway through the game and then went on a 15-7 run to close out the game. Senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) led UConn in the game with nine kills. She had no attack errors in the game and a hitting percentage of .900 as well as picking up three digs. Freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) and junior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) each had three kills in the game and Silver also had one service ace and one solo block.
The second game proved to be closer for the Huskies. The score was tied five times before UConn took a 15-11 lead midway through. South Florida battled back, however, to tie the game at 19 all. The score was knotted twice more before freshman Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.) had a solo block to give UConn a 22-21 advantage. The Huskies would keep the lead to close out the Bulls, 30-25, in the game. Crawley had seven kills in the game while fellow senior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) added five kills in the UConn win.
A tough test came in the third game, as the two teams traded points back and forth until South Florida took a 25-23 lead. The Bulls would hold onto the lead to serve game point, 29-25. However, UConn battled back to tie the game at 29-29. The score was again tied at 30-30 and 31-31 before a kill by Crawley gave the Huskies the game, 33-31, and the match, 3-0.
For the match, Crawley led UConn with 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .567. She had 11 digs in the match as well. Ashley added 11 kills, three digs and three blocks in the win while Singer and Silver each had seven kills. Singer also picked up five digs and one service ace while Silver had one solo block and seven block assists in the match. Senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) had 44 assists and two kills while picking up six digs and two blocks in the UConn win.
Kristina Fabris led South Florida with 15 kills. Johari Williams had 10 kills for the Bulls as well as 11 digs.
The Huskies are next in action on Saturday, Nov. 5 when they travel to Rutgers. Match time is scheduled for noon.
