STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 3) -- University of Connecticut corner back Darius Butler was named the BIG EAST’s Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon while quarterback Matt Bonislawski and tailback Terry Caulley were both named to the league’s weekly Honor Roll. It is the first such honors for Butler and Caulley while Bonislawski was also named to the Honor Roll for his performance in UConn’s win over Liberty on Sept. 10.
Butler tied a school, BIG EAST, and Michie Stadium record when he intercepted three passes in UConn’s 47-13 win at Army on Oct. 1. It is the only three-interception game in the nation this year to date and the first at UConn since 1984. Butler returned his interceptions for a school-record 122 yards, including an 86-yard touchdown. That run back was the third longest in school history and UConn’s longest interception return since Dave Korponai ran one back 100 yards against Rhode Island on Nov. 17, 1962. Butler’s 122 total return yards is the second-best effort in BIG EAST history, trailing only the 172 by Vann Washington of West Virginia on Oct. 29, 1994 against Louisiana Tech. The three interceptions tied, and the 122 yards broke, facility records for Army’s fabled Michie Stadium, which has seen many of college football’s finest since it opened in 1924.
Caulley earned UConn’s offensive game ball after gaining 133 all purpose yards in UConn's win at Army, rushing the ball 22 times for 87 yards while tying his career high with a team-leading six catches, good for 46 yards. Caulley also rushed for a pair of touchdowns, moving him into a tie with Taber Small (1999-2001) for second place in school history with 26 on his career. The game ball that he earned is the fifth of his career, most amongst active Huskies.
Bonislawski completed an efficient 18-of-26 passes at Army (69%) for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns, without being intercepted, to guide the Huskies to a 47-13 win. The junior signal caller also carried the ball seven times for 31 yards in the game.
The Huskies return to action on Friday night when they play host to Syracuse at Rentschler Field in UConn’s BIG EAST Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. on ESPN2. The conference office also announced on Monday that UConn’s game at Cincinnati on Oct. 15 will not be televised. The Bearcats have set kickoff for 4:00 p.m.
