Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker To Marquette, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 23) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team fell to Marquette, 3-1 (21-30, 30-25, 29-31, 32-34) on Sunday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. With the loss, UConn slips to 10-12 overall and 2-6 in the BIG EAST while Marquette is 11-10 and 4-5.
Marquette dominated the first game of the match, taking an early 2-0 lead that they would relinquish. Freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) led UConn in the game with four kills while sophomore Sade Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and junior Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash.) each had three kills in the game despite the loss.
The second game was a tight one at the opening, with Marquette taking the early 5-0 lead. UConn tied the score at six all as the two teams traded points back and forth, tying the score twice more before UConn took a 15-14 lead halfway through the game after scoring four consecutive points. The Huskies built upon that lead to take the game, 30-25. Senior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) had five kills in the game while Singer and senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) had three kills apiece in the UConn win.
The third game was even tighter than the second, as the two teams battled for points throughout. The game saw numerous lead changes and 14 times the score was tied. UConn took a 29-27 lead and looked to close out the game, but could not hold on against four straight Marquette points to drop the game, 29-31. Silver had five kills in the battle for the Huskies and hit a stellar .714 for the game. Crawley also had three kills while three Huskies picked up service aces in the loss.
The fourth game again saw the two teams headed to extra points, as UConn again held a 29-27 lead in the closing moments. It was the first UConn lead of the game. Marquette tied the score at 29 all on an attack error by Singer, but the Huskies battled back to take a 30-29 lead. The score was tied three more times, at 30-30, 31-31 and 32-32 before Marquette rattled off two straight points to take the game and the match. Singer had four kills in the game wile Silver, Ashley and Crawley each picked up two kills.
For the match, Singer led UConn with 13 kills. She also had two service aces and three digs in the loss. Ashley, Crawley and Silver each had 10 kills in the loss, with Crawley also picking up seven kills and four block assists in the match. Silver had one dig and eight block assists as well as one solo block in the loss. Freshman Lorelle Schaub (New Brighton, Minn.) had four kills and six block assists while senior Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) had 45 assists and nine digs in the loss.
Jaime Mueller had 16 kills and 15 digs to lead Marquette. Kimberly Todd had 14 kills while Tiffany Helmbrecht and Theresa Coughlin each had eight kills in the Golden Eagles victory.
The Huskies are next in action on Friday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Georgetown for an 8:00 p.m. start.
