Volleyball Falls To Syracuse, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 22) - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Syracuse, 3-1 (23-30, 23-30, 30-24, 20-30) on Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion. UConn is now 10-11 overall on the season and 2-5 against BIG EAST opponents while Syracuse is 18-7 and 6-2.
In the first game, UConn opened by winning the first four points. The Huskies led the game until the Orange came back to tie it at 11. The two teams traded points until Syracuse took a 19-18 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. For the game, senior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) had three kills and one block to lead the Huskies.
The second game was dominated by Syracuse from the beginning. Just as UConn had picked up the first four points of the first game, the Orange took a 4-0 lead to open game two and never looked back. This Syracuse victory was despite seven kills and five digs from freshman Sarah Singer (Waukesha, Wisc.) and three kills from Ashley in the game.
The two teams traded points and tied the score nine times before UConn took the lead, 13-12, midway through the third game. It was a lead that the Huskies would not relinquish, even though the Orange tied the score twice more. For the game, UConn was led by junior Kaity Craig (Terryville, Conn.), who had a hitting percentage of .714 while picking up five kills in the game. She also had one block in the UConn win while senior Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) also had five kills and three digs in the game.
The fourth game was again close at the beginning before Syracuse took a 6-5 lead and would not trail again in the game. Ashley led UConn in the game with four kills while Singer, Craig and Crawley each had three kills.
For the match, Singer and Crawley led the Huskies with 12 kills apiece. Singer also had five digs and two service aces while Crawley had six digs. Ashley picked up 11 kills in the four games as well as scooping up nine digs and serving one ace. Craig had eight kills, three digs and one block while sophomore Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) had nine digs and one service ace.
Kelly Duan and Kristen Conway each had 20 kills to lead Syracuse. Duan also had three service aces and six digs in the match. Cheryl Cobbina had nine kills while Aila Dommestrup had 54 assists and three service aces.
The Huskies are next in action on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they host Marquette in Gampel Pavilion. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
