Men's Tennis In Action at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. (Oct. 16) -- Joey Michaels advanced to the semifinals of the Singles "B" draw to highlight the UConn men's tennis team's showing at the Quinnipiac Invitational, Oct. 14-16 in Hamden, Conn.
Michaels, seeded second in the flight, knocked off Peter Czajaka of St. Peter's and Joey Merendino of Sacred Heart before falling in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to eventual flight winner Stefano Salvatore of host Quinnipiac. Nate Carvalho also played in the "B" Draw but fell in the first round.
Sho Sato and Craig Helstowski represented UConn in the "A" singles draw, but both lost their respective first round matches. At the "C" level, Ben Scheuler topped Glen Gannon of Fairfield, 5-7, 6-3, 13-11, before falling in the quarterfinals to Goldy Sherrill of Quinnipiac. UConn's Christian Malerba also played in the "C" draw and lost in the opening round. All three of UConn's entrants in the Singles "D" flight, Joel Gamoran, Mike Bobitski and Aaron Ribchinsky, handily won their first round matches before losing in much tighter matches in the quarters.
UConn sent a doubles team through to the semifinals of both the "A" and "B" draws.
In the top flight, Sato and Carvahlo downed teams from both Fairfield and Sacred Hart before losing to eventual winners Salvatore and Sherrill of Quinnipiac. UConn also entered teams of Helstowski/Scheuler and Jeff Klar/Ribchinsky into the "A" draw. Helstowski and Scheuler downed DeSanto and Deaver of Holy Cross, 8-2, in their first match before losing in the quarters. Klar and Ribchinsky narrowly lost in the opening round 9-8 (2) to Duffy and Redmond of Rhode Island.
Bobitski and Gamoran were Doubles "B" semifinalists. The Husky tandem beat both Costin and Marcello of URI along with Palumbo and Chiricosta of Fairfield before losing an 8-5 decision to Altman and Kreyman of the homestanding Bobcats. Michaels and Malerba topped Steere and Hart of Rhode Island, 9-7, in the lower half of the draw, but lost in the quarters.
