Men's and Women's Swimming Opens Season at Invitational

STORRS, Conn. (October 15, 2005) - The University of Connecticut Men’s and Women’s Swim Team successfully opened the season by winning 21 events at the Husky Invitational on Saturday at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. Five teams participated in the Invitational which was not scored.
Junior Tristan Jones (Wanniassa, Australia) led the Huskies with wins in the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Seniors Mike McNulty (Hartland, Wis.) and Tim Mahar (Moreno Valley, Calif.) placed first in the 400 IM and 100 backstroke, respectively. Freshman Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) dominated the butterfly with wins in both the 100 and the 200. Also adding wins for UConn were Junior Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.) and Sophomores Michael Brocki (Westhampton, N.Y.) and Chris Ferreira (Madison, Conn.).
Senior Ryan Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) picked up two victories for the women’s team winning both the 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke. The UConn women locked down the freestyle winning all five events with Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) in the 50 and 100, Emily Karel (Bethesda, Md.) in the 200, Danielle Sanders (Mississauga, Ontario) in the 500 and Sarah Kearns (Milford, Mass.) in the 1000. Freshmen Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) and Kristalynn Kempton (Glen Head, N.Y.) also added wins for the Huskies.
The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams return to action on Friday, October 21 when they travel to Fordham. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
