Men's Tennis Competes in Northeast Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 26) - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team completed its play in the Northeast Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 26. The event was hosted by the Brown University in Providence, R.I.
Senior Joe Mercuri was the lone UConn player to advance past the Round of 16, when he defeated Kyle Duffy of Rhode Island, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, the #9 Flight Singles. He then fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Dan Doenges of Assumption in the quarterfinals.
Sam Sutherland dropped his opening match to Alex Chang of Army, 6-3, 6-3. The senior co-captain then bounced back to win his next three and finish in ninth place with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dave Reuter of Niagara in the final match.
In doubles action, Mercuri and Sutherland advanced on a walkover by Hluch/Cha of Hofstra. The duo then fell to Bucknell's Dichiara/Mene, 8-6 to move to the consolation bracket. Sutherland and Mercuri then defeated Chuntraruk/Chang of Army, 9-8 (6) before dropping the fifth-place match to Hartford's Acuna/Kirchner by a score of 8-5.
