Volleyball Topples Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-0

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 25) -- The University of Connecticut (5-5) blanked the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-7), 3-0 in women’s volleyball action on Saturday, day two of the Toyota UConn Husky Classic, at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies won their games by the scores of 30-22, 31-29 and 30-16.
Junior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) led the UConn offense with 12 kills and added seven digs while senior captain Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, Calif.) tallied 11 kills with four service aces and 14 digs, earning them both All-Tournament honors. Freshman Julie Pickard (Hillsborough, N.C.) posted 11 digs and junior setter Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) aided the attack with 38 helpers.
Aja Smith had a match-high 15 kills for the Hawks to go along with two service aces and eight digs. All-Tournament team selection Jana Milin contributed 14 kills and 15 digs, while setter Kate Smith recorded 33 assists, despite the loss.
In other action at the Toyota UConn Husky Classic, Marquette defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-0 by the scores of 30-24, 30-14 and 30-16. Marquette senior Erica Heisser was named the Tournament MVP, while Erin Freer and Kimberly Todd also represented the Golden Eagles on the All-Tournament squad.
Connecticut next plays host to Fairfield in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 29th, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
