Volleyball Blanks Stony Brook, 3-0 to Win Connecticut Invitational

STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Connecticut’s women’s volleyball team (4-3) swept Stony Brook (2-3), 3-0 to pick up its fourth-straight win and to capture the Connecticut Invitational on Saturday at Gampel Pavilion.
The Huskies downed the Seawolves by the scores of 30-20, 30-18 and 33-31. Senior captain Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, Calif.) totaled 14 kills, an ace and 16 digs, to help earn her tournament MVP honors. All-Tournament selection junior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) added 14 kills and 10 digs, while classmate Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) posted 36 assists and 10 digs and was also named to the All-Tournament team. Freshman Sadé Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded 10 kills for the Huskies and classmate Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) registered 16 digs.
Morgan Sweany led Stony Brook with 12 kills and also tallied nine digs. Abby Egan amassed 30 digs and represented the Seawolves on the All-Tournament squad. Maria Samilo and Sarah Bauer, chipped in with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
In other action at the Connecticut Invitational on Saturday, Long Island defeated Holy Cross, 3-0. The Blackbirds took home the Connecticut Invitational Runner-up trophy and Dana Demayo and Lizelle Jackson rounded out the All-Tournament selections.
UConn travels to Northeastern on Tuesday, September 14th for a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
