Huskies Sweep on Day One of the Volleyball Connecticut Invitational

STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Connecticut’s women’s volleyball team (3-3) posted two 3-0 shutout wins on day one of the Connecticut Invitational as it defeated Holy Cross (1-4) and Long Island (5-2) at Gampel Pavilion on Friday.
In the Huskies’ first match of the day, UConn defeated Holy Cross by the scores of 30-18, 30-19 and 30-21. Senior captain Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, Calif.) helped lead the Huskies to victory with a match-best 13 kills, 18 digs and a career-high eight aces. Sophomore Megan Silver (Snohomish, Wash) followed on the offensive end with 10 kills, junior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) chipped in defensively with 11 digs and junior setter Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) added 41 assists.
Caitlin Agostinacchio and Diane Marzelli led the Crusaders with seven kills apiece while Christy Fanning recorded a team-high 14 digs followed by Lauren Liesman with 11 digs.
Connecticut swept Long Island 30-25, 37-35 and 30-26 in its second contest. The Blackbirds threatened in the second game after overcoming a 10-point deficit, but back-to-back kills from Ashley and freshman Sadé Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) gave the Huskies the tiebreaking points they needed and the win.
Ashley lead the attack with 16 kills, two aces and also posted 14 digs. Hadenfeldt totaled 15 kills and 13 digs, while Chambers and senior captain Brittany Conover (Bargersville, Ind.) recorded 12 kills each. Freshman Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) totaled a team-high 24 digs and Neelands registered 54 helpers and 14 digs in the victory.
Dana Demayo had a team-best 15 kills and 31 digs for Long Island, Lizelle Jackson followed with 14 kills and 11 digs, and Ivana Vasiljevic managed 45 assists and 10 digs, despite the loss.
In other action on day one of the Connecticut Invitational, Long Island defeated Stony Brook, 3-1 and Holy Cross Fell to Stony Brook, 3-0.
The Connecticut Invitational continues on Saturday, September 11, with Holy Cross facing Long Island at 12:00 p.m and UConn going up against Stony Brook at 2:00 p.m.
