Huskies Swept in Doubleheader by Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI (May 1) - The University of Connecticut softball team saw their BIG EAST Tournament hopes end at Providence, as the Huskies were swept by scores of 3-2 and 3-1 by the Friars on Saturday afternoon.
The losses drop UConn to 6-12 in conference play with only two games remaining. The Huskies are now 23-23 for the season. Providence improves to 34-18-1 overall and 10-8 in the BIG EAST.
UConn was down 3-0 to Providence until starting a late rally in the top of the seventh, coming up with two runs. Chrissy Iannolo hit a two RBI double in the bottom of the third for the Friars, and Cori Van Deusen's solo home run led off the fifth inning for Providence to put them up 3-0.
The Huskies had recorded just three hits prior to the seventh inning, and then came alive with five hits. Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) hit a solo home run to record her third of the season, and Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) singled with the bases loaded to bring home another run for UConn.
Providence pitcher Van Deusen struck out UConn's final batter with the bases loaded to end the game.
The Huskies out-hit the Friars in the totals column once again in game two, but scored just one run while Providence recorded three.
UConn's lone run came in their first at bat when Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.) singled to score Campen who had reached on a double.
The Friars scored all three runs in the second inning on Van Deusen's second home run of the day with two runners on base.
The Huskies loaded the bases in the fourth inning with singles by Jen D'Angelo (Wyommissing, Pa.) and Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) and a walk by Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.), but were once again stopped by the Providence pitching staff who retired the final batter with a strike out.
UConn pitcher Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, Pa.) displayed a solid performance in game two, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters in the complete game.
The Huskies will face Pittsburgh in a home doubleheader on Sunday, May 9 to end the season. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m., and Arbogast will be honored as the lone senior in the Hartford Courant/CareerBuilder.com Senior Salute.
