Huskies Roll to Victory at the UConn Invitational

STORRS, CT (April 3) - Fifteen first-place finishes out of 19 total events helped propel the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team to victory at the UConn Invite #1 held at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. Junior April Garner (Temple Hills, Md.), senior Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, Conn.) and senior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, Conn.) all recorded multiple wins for the Huskies.
UConn earned 282 team points to win the meet, with Dartmouth coming in second with 118 points. Vermont was third with 70 points.
Garner took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.81, and took another win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.81. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash. Hines was another star in the track events, winning the 200-meter dash in 26.07, and also taking first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.05.
Also performing strong in the track events were junior Julie LaFrano (Loudonville, N.Y.) with a win in the 5000-meter run, freshman Marlene Priest (South Dennis, Mass.) with a win in the 400-meter hurdles and a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, freshman Jillian Sullivan who won the 3000-meter steeplechase in her first attempt at the event, and senior Allison McCabe (Reading, Mass.) who took second-place finishes in both the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run.
The Huskies were equally as strong in the field events, winning all but two. Three-time All-American Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, N.J.) took a win in the high jump with a mark of 1.68 meters, and did not attempt any other heights due to the poor weather conditions. Sophomore Leah Williams (Brookfield, Conn.) won the pole vault with a mark of 2.89 meters, and sophomore Francesca Kersenbrock (Lake Mary, Fla.) won the triple jump with a jump of 11.25 meters. Freshman Jennifer Rogers (Parksville, B.C.) placed second in both the long jump and the triple jump.
UConn made a sweep of the top three spots in both the shot put and the discus, as freshman Allison Booth (Shelby, Ohio) won the first and Parkosewich won the second. Parkosewich also took second in the shot put, and took a second win in the hammer throw with a mark of 52.26 meters. Freshman Cassie Buckwalter (New Wilmington, Pa.) took third in the in the shot put and second in the discus, and Booth took third in the discus to complete the sweep.
The Huskies also took wins in both the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. UConn will return to action on Saturday, April 10. Some team members will be traveling to the SeaRay Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., and another meet for that day is yet to be determined.
