PISCATAWAY, NJ (April 17) – Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) pitched a complete-game shutout in game one of a doubleheader as the University of Connecticut softball team defeated Rutgers 2-0. The Scarlet Knights rebounded in the second game to record a shutout of their own with a 5-0 win over the Huskies.
The split moves UConn to 17-17 overall and 2-6 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers now stands at 19-22 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
UConn recorded one run on two hits in each of the first two innings of game one. Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.) recorded her fifth RBI in as many games with a single through the right side in the top of the first to score Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.). Earlier in the inning, Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) led off with a single to left field and was put out at third on a fielder’s choice, allowing Schettini to advance.
Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) started the second inning on a strong note with a base hit, and was followed by Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) who blasted a double to left field. A ground out on Jen Ward’s (Gales Ferry, Conn.) at bat scored DiBiase from third to put UConn up 2-0, which would prove to be the final score of the game.
Only two runners reached base in the following three and a half innings, both Scarlet Knights, but none went further than second base. The Huskies had a solid seventh inning with three hits, but left three runners on base.
Gurney struck out five batters and walked none, while giving up only five hits in seven innings of work to improve her season record to 12-8.
Rutgers’ Jessica Crosby pitched the complete-game shutout in the second game of the doubleheader, as the Scarlet Knights defeated UConn 5-0.
The Scarlet Knights took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, when with two runners on and no one out, Nikki Childress hit a home run over the left field fence. The Huskies drew a pair of walks and loaded the bases on an error in the sixth inning, but a strike out ended the comeback chances.
Rutgers added two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to up the lead to 5-0.
UConn returns to action on Sunday, April 18 with a doubleheader at Villanova, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
