UConn Shuts Out Quinnipiac in Both Games of a Doubleheader

STORRS, CT (March 30) - Junior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) struck out 12 and allowed no earned runs in game one, and sophomore Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, N.Y.) fanned nine and gave up just one hit as the University of Connecticut softball team swept visiting Quinnipiac in both games of a doubleheader. The Huskies won 5-0 in the first game, and 3-0 in the second, to improve their overall season record to 13-12. The Bobcats drop to 4-13 with the losses.
UConn spread out their five runs over four innings in the first game, getting their first run in the bottom of the second when junior Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a double and advancing on a single by freshman Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.).
De Bary struck again in the bottom of the third, as her second double of the game brought home two runs for UConn. Freshman Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) put the lead at 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth when she scored on an error after reaching on a single. Junior Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning and give UConn its fifth run. De Bary followed Campen with her third double of the game in as many at bats, and sophomore Nikki Ribeiro (Norton, Mass.) singled in the inning, but both runners were left on base.
Gurney not only struck out 12 of the 25 batters she faced, but also gave up just one walk and three hits. The Huskies out-hit the Bobcats 11-3 in the game.
Game two displayed more dominance by UConn, who recorded seven hits to Quinnipiac’s one. Caouette nearly had a no-hitter despite walking five batters, but the Bobcats finally got on base with a hit in the sixth inning.
Junior Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, Pa.) singled to left field to score Calcagno in the bottom of the third inning, and UConn scored its only other two runs in the fifth inning on a second RBI single by D’Angelo, and a RBI single from senior Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, Pa.).
Calcagno finished the day going 3-for-4 with two runs, and Arbogast was 3-for-5 with one RBI. D’Angelo and Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) both went 2-for-3 in the second game, with D’Angelo recording one RBI. DeBary finished 3-for-4 in game one with one run and two RBI, and Campen was also 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, April 2 when they travel to BIG EAST rival Notre Dame for a doubleheader, set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
