CHESTNUT HILL, MA (Feb. 7) - In a rare occurrence, the University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team tied Boston College, 150-150, on Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Meanwhile, the Husky men rolled to a 191-109 win to improve to 7-3 on the year. The women are now 7-2-1.
Lindsay Hansen, Ryan Smith and Jacquelyn Craft were all winners of two events to help lead the UConn women. Hansen picked up a pair of distance wins, taking the 500 and 1000 freestyle competitions, Craft excelled in the breaststroke, winning the event for both 100 and 200 yards, while Smith won the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. UConn also got a strong showing from its 400 medley relay team of Smith, Craft, Hansen and Kydani Dover, which finished in 3:53. The entire women’s meet came down to the day’s final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The Eagles won it, but by taking both second and third, each squad ended the day with 150 team points. It is just the second tie of Bob Goldberg’s 16 years as head coach at UConn.
On the men’s side, Dustin Rogers was his usual dominating presence, winning the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and participating on a pair of winning relay teams. Joe Cramer, like Hansen, won the 500 and 1000 freestyles. Freshman Kevin Thompson scored a 293.92 to win the one-meter diving event, a score that qualified him for the NCAA Diving Zones in Annapolis in March.
UConn will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when select Huskies head to Piscataway, N.J. for a last chance qualifying meet. The Huskies next team action comes Feb. 19-21 when UConn will compete at the BIG EAST Championship.
