Volleyball Handles Villanova, 3-1

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Oct. 1) -- The University of Connecticut (7-5, 0-0 BE) women’s volleyball team defeated Villanova (4-7, 0-0 BE), 3-1 on Friday, day one of the BIG EAST Challenge, hosted by Rutgers University. The Huskies won games one and two by the scores of 30-25 and 30-17, then dropped game three, 22-30 before securing the victory with a 30-14 win in game four.
Senior tri-captain Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, Calif.) led the Huskies offense with 19 kills and also chipped in on the defensive end with 17 digs. Junior tri-captain Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) and freshman Sadé Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) followed, both totaling 11 kills as Chambers hit .474 for the match and Crawley hit .400. Defensively, freshman Brittany Stewart (Dolton, Ill.) posted a match-high 17 digs and junior Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, Md.) added 14 digs. Junior setter Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded 46 assists and 13 digs to help UConn to its third-straight victory.
Adrian Semrau posted 16 kills for the Wildcats and teammate Kacy Sellers tallied 14 kills. Dana Kabashima and Celine Nguyen led Villanova’s defense with 14 and 12 digs, respectively, while Stephanie Olsen registered 39 assists.
UConn will next face Boston College in the championship game of the BIG EAST Challenge on Saturday, October 2, at 4:00 p.m.
