MORGANTOWN, WV (Jan. 31) - Six University of Connecticut swimmers, and diver Chase Dunlap, all won multiple events as the Huskies split a dual meet at West Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the WVU Natatorium in Morgantown. The UConn women recorded a 178-120 win over the Mountaineers to improve to 6-2 on the season while the UConn men fell to 5-3 with a 165-135 loss.
The women captured every individual swimming event, and 13 of the 16 events overall, en route to a convincing team victory. Eight different Huskies won an event on Saturday led by double winners Jacquelyn Craft (100 and 200 breaststroke), Heather Grieb (100 backstroke and 200 individual medley), Lindsay Hansen (100 butterfly and 1000 freestyle), and Cassie Novak (200 and 500 freestyle). Courtney Townsend won an event for the first time this season as she needed 24.49 seconds to sprint to victory in the 50 freestyle. Kydani Dover took the 100 freestyle in 53.93 seconds while Ryan Smith captured the 200 backstroke in 2:06.04 and Bridget Regan emerged victorious in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.74. In addition to its clean sweep of the solo swimming events, UConn won the 200 medley relay to open the meet, with Smith, Craft, Diane Duncheskie and Jenny Chang finishing in a time of 1:48.49.
Tristan Jones and Dustin Rogers joined Dunlap as multiple event winners for the Husky men. Rogers captured the 100 and 200 freestyle events in times of 46.92 and 1:43.45, respectively. Rogers also won both the 100 and 200 freestyle events last Saturday at home against Syracuse. Jones placed first in the 100 breaststroke (59.28) and the 200 individual medley (1:24.29), the competition’s final individual event, sending UConn home on a high note. Dunlap continued strong recent performances off of the springboard, capturing both the one meter and three meter events with scores of 249.38 and 247.53, respectively. Not to be outdone, Bobby Folan also helped the UConn cause by narrowly edging out WVU’s Rick Mann to win the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:55.20. It took a strong effort by the Mountaineers to shut the strong Husky relay teams out of the top spot as WVU set pool records to claim both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay events.
UConn will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 3 when the Huskies head to Worcester, Mass. to face Holy Cross at 6:00 p.m.
