UConn Men's Swimming and Diving Clipped By Syracuse

STORRS, CT (Jan. 24) - The University of Connecticut swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs in the teams’ final home meet of the 2003-04 season. In what is often a close dual meet for both teams, the UConn women came away with a 139-102 victory over Syracuse to improve to 5-2 on the season but the Orangemen took a 128-115 decision from the homestanding Huskies, dropping UConn to 5-2 on the season.
Freshman Kailly Thull won both of the diving events to lead the UConn women, capturing the one meter competition with a score of 225.29 and the three meter event with a score of 401.70. Freshmen Jacquelyn Craft and Jenny Chang continued to show why the future of UConn swimming is so bright. Chang won the 100 freestyle in 53.97 while Craft cruised in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.45 that was almost six full seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Sophomore Ryan Smith was victorious in the 200 backstroke, needing 2:07.94 to finish the race while junior Cathy Brown took the 50 freestyle in 25.00 seconds. Both of UConn’s relay teams also won their events as the Huskies took the 400 medley in 3:55.49 and the 400 freestyle in 3:08.56.
Senior Dustin Rogers was the lone dual event winner on the men’s side as the senior claimed the 100 and 200 freestyle events in times of 46.48 and 1:43.15 respectively. It was a strong afternoon for the UConn divers as senior Chase Dunlap recorded a mark of 519.30 from the three meter board to qualify for the NCAA Diving Zones, to be held March 14-15 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Meanwhile Kevin Thompson posted BIG EAST Championship qualifying marks in both the one and three meter events. Freshman Tristan Jones captured the 200 individual medley for the Huskies in a time of 1:56.57 while UConn’s 400 freestyle relay team also captured its event.
UConn will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 when the Huskies head to Morgantown, W. Va. to face West Virginia at 1:00 p.m.
