STORRS, CT (September 24) – Andres Rota (Kingswood, TX) notched the game-winning goal with 12-seconds left in the second overtime period to defeat No. 25 Boston College, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The game is the third shutout for Connecticut, who is now 3-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST, while Boston College fell to 3-4-1 overall, 1-2-0 in the league.
The first half of play was evenly contested by Boston College and UConn, each team having few solid scoring chances. Neil Krauss had Boston College’s only shot on goal during then first half, heading the ball into the arms of UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI).
One of UConn’s solid chances of the game came at the 54:30 mark of the game. Steve Sealy (St. James, Trinidad) went up for the ball, along with Boston College keeper Issey Maholo. Sealy got a head on it before Maholo’s hand could reach the ball, sending it off the right post and back into the playing field. Later, UConn missed an opportunity to end the game’s deadlock, just 10-minutes after the first chance. Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) made a forward pass on the right flank to the foot of Drew Brown (Middletown, CT). Brown broke through a sliding defenseman, and made a lateral pass to Sealy just inside the 18-yard mark. Sealy shot the ball to the opposite post, grazing the Eagle defense, just to the right of the post and out of bounds. Boston College’s best chance of the half came with just over three-minutes left in regulation. Jarryd Goldberg nailed a shot from outside the Eagle offensive box, bending the ball allowing a diving Schuerman to punch the ball out of harm’s way.
With two-minutes left in the first overtime period, Krause took a rocket of a shot into the arms of Schuerman, who made the diving save, taking the wind out of him.
The game-winning goal came with 12-seconds left in the second overtime period after a Lindon Pecorelli (LaCrescenta, CA) corner kick. Moshe Shalchon (Rishon Lezioh, Israel) kicked the ball back out to Rota from the mess of players in the goal box. Rota controlled the ball inside the box, and dished the shot toward the goal. The Boston College keeper, Maholo was at the opposite side of the goal, and didn’t have a chance to get back to make the save.
Schuerman was solid in net making five key saves, while Maholo made four stops in net. UConn and Boston College were even in shot attempts at 12 apiece.
Connecticut will travel to West Virginia to take on BIG EAST rival West Virginia on Saturday, September 27 at 7:00 pm in Morgantown.
