Four Huskies Honored With Post-Season Awards

ROANOKE, VA (May 8) - Four members of the University of Connecticut softball team have received postseason honors from the BIG EAST Conference. Shortstop Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) and Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA), who plays first base were placed on the All-BIG EAST Second Team along with Barb Cook (Conklin, NY). Cook earned the utility spot for her work on the mound and at third base. Freshman catcher Kim Castner (Forked River, NJ) earned All-Rookie Team honors. In addition to her BIG EAST honor, Cook was named to the Division I All-Star First Team by the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association.
Schettini led the team in batting average, both overall (.354) and in BIG EAST games (.413). In conference play, she knocked two homeruns, one triple and two doubles on a total of 26 hits. She ranked second in RBI with 15. In the field, she tallied 25 putouts and 46 assists.
Arbogast followed right behind Schettini in batting average, with a .279 in all games and picked it up to a .407 average in conference games only. She hit a team-high six homeruns, all in BIG EAST games and added one double in conference play for a .729 slugging percentage. Her 19 RBI also led the team in conference games. At first base, she had 162 putouts and added nine assists while committing no errors to make her the only player with a perfect fielding percentage who played in all conference games.
Cook split her time between the mound and third base, while also contributing on the offensive end. Cook placed fourth in team batting average in conference games with .262. She had 17 hits in BIG EAST play, including four doubles, one triple and one homerun. On the mound, she appeared in 10 conference games, accumulating a record of 4-3 and had a team-best 2.36 ERA. She struck out 42 batters in 56.1 innings pitched and earned two shutouts in five complete games. At third base, she made 13 putouts and assisted on 55 others.
Castner finished third on the team in BIG EAST batting with a .267 average. She played in 18 games and hit four doubles and three homeruns. Behind the plate, she had 53 putouts and seven assists. In UConn’s 2-0 win over Rutgers, she tagged out two runners trying to come home on the same play.
Connecticut’s four representatives on BIG EAST postseason teams places them tied for third behind Notre Dame with ten and Boston College with five. St. John’s also placed four athletes on post-season teams.
