JAMAICA, NY (May 4) - Last week’s BIG EAST Player of the Week Maggie Arbogast (Ambler) continued her hot streak at the plate, hitting a single, a double and a homerun in the University of Connecticut softball’s split with St. John’s on Sunday afternoon on Red Storm Field. The Huskies dropped game one, 7-6, but came back for a 7-5 win in the second game. Despite the four homeruns hit in the pair of games, UConn could not muster up enough points to advance to the BIG EAST playoffs next weekend in Salem, VA. Connecticut ends the season at 24-23-1 overall and 12-8 in the conference. St. John’s will not advance either and ends up at 29-28 and 9-11 in BIG EAST games.
The Huskies scored five runs in the top of the second inning on five hits and one error to get an early lead on the Red Storm in game one. Arbogast hit a double, sending home two runs. Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) hit her first homer of the season in the fourth to put the Huskies up 6-0.
UConn went into the bottom of the inning with a comfortable lead, until St. John’s replied with a five-run inning of their own. Cook let up four earned runs before Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, NY) came in for relief in the fourth inning. The Red Storm tied things up in the fifth on two hits, but the Huskies made a crucial play at home to close the inning with three St. John’s runners left on base. UConn fell behind in the sixth, losing their six-run lead and falling in game one, 7-6.
Cook suffered the loss for Connecticut, as Meghan Allman recorded the win. At the plate, Cook went two-for-four with two RBI.
UConn started off game two a little more slowly, putting two runs on the board in each the second and third innings. Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, CT) hit a two-run home run to score herself and Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) who hit a double to get on base. Cook started the third inning with a double and scored on a single by Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY).
St. John’s had an answer for two in the fourth, but UConn increased their lead right away, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. Schettini hit a two-run shot over the fence and Arbogast hit her third homerun in two days. The Red Storm added two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but UConn held on to the lead, coming out on top, 7-5.
Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) recorded the win and Melanie Lehman took the loss.
