SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (May 3) – The University of Connecticut softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Seton Hall, losing 6-3 and 11-5, at Cameron Field in South Orange, NJ on Saturday afternoon. The losses drop the Huskies to 23-22-1 on the year and 11-7 in BIG EAST play while the Pirates improve to 36-11 overall and 12-6 in league games.
Seton Hall scored twice in its opening at bat of the day on a sacrifice fly and a ground out, but UConn tied the first game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run to center field by Kim Caster, her third homer of the season. The Pirates picked up four runs in the sixth off of Barb Cook to take a commanding lead with the key hit being a two-RBI double to right center by D’arcy Djakalovic. UConn rallied in the seventh when Jennifer D’Angelo plated Campen on a sacrifice fly, but UConn would get no closer, accounting for the 6-3 final.
Christina Shanko picked up the win to improve to 20-3 on the mound for Seton Hall while Cook was tagged with the loss.
Both teams hit three home runs in the nightcap, but the Pirates’ cannons thundered loudest in an 11-5 win. The 11 runs tied No. 8 Georgia’s total from February 22 as the most against UConn this year. A pair of Husky errors helped Seton Hall plate three runs in the first but UConn closed its deficit to 3-2 in the third on a two-run shot by Maggie Arbogast, the first of two taters on the day for her. Seton Hall scratched out a run in the bottom of the third and then busted loose for four in the fourth, keyed by a three-run homer to left field by Laura Taylor. Arbogast’s second two-run homer of the day in the fifth and Jen Ward’s solo shot in the sixth cut the gap to 8-5 but Casey McDevitt came out of the bullpen to halt the Husky rally. Seton Hall tacked on three runs in the home half of the sixth, when Anne Leone and Lindsay Trottier hit back-to-back homers, to ice the game.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, May 4 when they travel to St. John’s for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
