UConn Takes Two From Syracuse in BIG EAST Play

STORRS, CT (April 28) – The University of Connecticut softball team swept the Syracuse Orangewomen, 4-1 in game one and 11-3 in four and a half innings in game two at the UConn Softball Stadium on Monday afternoon. The Huskies improve to 21-20-1 and 9-5 in BIG EAST games as Syracuse falls to 14-24 and 4-12 in the league.
Syracuse started things off quickly, as Tanya Rose led off the first inning with a triple to left center field and scored on a wild pitch for the Orangewomen’s only run of game one.
The Huskies responded immediately, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the inning. Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) walked and advanced on a fielder’s choice. She crossed the plate on a single by Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA). Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) scored the winning run in the third. She started out with a single, advanced on a throwing error and was awarded third on an illegal pitch. Schettini drove her in with a single to shortstop.
Jen D’Angelo started off the fourth inning with a single to center field. Arbogast hit her third homerun for the week to left field, earning two RBI on the play.
Cook earned the win for UConn and improves to 7-6 as Tara DiMaggio suffered the loss, falling to 9-13.
The Huskies scored five runs in each the second and third inning to end game two early. Cook scored the first run, reaching on an error and advanced to second on Ashleigh Campen's (Rougemont, NC) sacrifice bunt. She was moved over to third by Schettini's infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Arbogast.
UConn tallied four hits in the second inning to pull ahead 6-0. Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA) started the inning with a single to left field. Cook, Campen and D'Angelo all added singles in the inning as well.
The Orangewomen got on the board in the top of the third, started off by a single by Nikki Lincoln. Lincoln scored on Tanya Rose's single to left field and Rose scored, along with Katie Kaempfer, on Rachel Park's single to center.
Connecticut put up five more in the bottom of the inning on three hits and one error to pull ahead by eight runs. The Huskies held Syracuse in the top of the fifth to end the game.
Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) earned the win for a record of 10-8 as Haley Larsen took the loss and falls to 1-6.
Connecticut returns to action on Wednesday, April 30 for a makeup doubleheader against Providence at 3 p.m. at the UConn Softball Stadium.
