Huskies Perform Well at BIG EAST Championships

The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams broke a total of 23 school records as the teams competed in the BIG EAST Championship from Feb. 20-23, 2003, at Uniondale, N.Y. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished seventh in competition. Seven UConn swimmers were NCAA Championship “B” cut qualifiers, six were named All-BIG EAST Conference while 42 performers set personal bests.
The UConn men’s team had it first BIG EAST individual champion in four years as junior Dustin Rogers won the 100-meter butterfly in 48.35 seconds. That mark was also a UConn school record and an NCAA “B” cut time. He also broke the UConn school mark with a time of 48.86 seconds in the preliminaries.
Other UConn school men’s records set were: sophomore Bobby Folan in the 200 backstroke (1:50.05), senior Marshal Livingstone in the 200 freestyle (1:38.43 in the preliminary and 1:37.52 in the final), freshman Michael McNulty in the 200 backstroke (1:49.97 in the preliminary and 1:49.59 in the final), McNulty in the 200 individual medley (1:51.84), McNulty in the 400 individual medley (4:01.54 in the preliminary and 3:58.66 in the consolation final) and sophomore Bill Monaghan in the 200 fly (1:50.78). The Husky 800 meter freestyle relay team also set a school record.
Livingstone was also an NCAA “B” cut qualifier in the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle.
Other UConn school women’s records set were: sophomore Cathy Brown in the 100 fly (57.27), junior Elizabeth Campbell in the 200 butterfly (2:02.88), junior Lindsay Hansen in the 500 freestyle (4:55.21) and the 1650 freestyle (16:50.68) and sophomore Cassie Novak in the 200 freestyle (1:50.66). UConn’s 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams also set records.
Campbell was an NCAA “B” cut qualifier in the 200 butterfly while Hansen was in the 1650 freestyle and Novak earned that distinction in the 200 freestyle and the 200 backstroke (2:02.36).
