UConn Shuts Out Fairfield for Second Time This Season

FAIRFIELD, CT (Nov. 11) - With 14-kill performances from Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) and Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX), the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team solidly defeated Fairfield University 3-0 at Alumni Hall. Hadenfeldt also recorded a match-high 15 digs for her 21st double-double of the season. Crawley continued her tradition of accurate hitting, recording her 14 kills on 19 attempts with just two errors for a match-high hitting percentage of .632.
UConn moves to 18-12 overall with the win, while Fairfield drops to 7-22. The two teams faced each other earlier this season at the New Hampshire Wildcat Classic, ending with the same result of the Huskies winning 3-0. The scores in that match were 30-21, 30-23, 30-23, while the scores of today’s win were nearly the same at 30-21, 30-23, 30-25.
Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) tallied 45 assists for the Huskies, as the team recorded 55 kills to Fairfield’s 30. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) chipped in a double-figure performance on defense with 10 digs. The Stags were led by Laurie Brands with nine kills and four digs, and by Keri Kaiser with seven kills and 15 assists.
The Huskies controlled the majority of the match, and improved their hitting performances each game. Game three saw UConn tally 22 team kills and record a hitting percentage of .436. The Stags were held to negative percentages in games one and two, before having a strong game three with 15 kills and only five errors.
UConn tallied 43 team digs to Fairfield’s 27, as well as nine blocks to the Stags’ six. Service errors were the lone weakness for the Huskies, who committed 11 to Fairfield’s five.
The Huskies will play two more matches to end the regular season, both of which are BIG EAST road trips. On Friday, Nov. 14, UConn will play at Georgetown at 8:00 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 16, the Huskies travel to Villanova for a 2:00 p.m. match.
