STORRS, CT (Oct. 4) - Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) tied her career-high kills with 23 and also tallied 14 digs to lead the University of Connecticut volleyball team to a 3-1 victory in their first BIG EAST match of the season against Syracuse (13-7, 2-1) in Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies (11-6, 1-0) dropped the first game, but fought back with strong and scrappy play in the next three games to take the victory.
The two teams were nearly even on paper in game one, but the Orangewomen began with a small early lead and held it throughout to win 30-26, led by Kristen Conway with five kills and only one error in the game. The Huskies looked like a new team in the second game, dominating on both offense and defense, and out-hitting Syracuse .464 to .050. UConn steadily increased their lead in the game, and saw their strength in blocking as they recorded 5.5 total team blocks to zero for Syracuse and eventually won the game 30-19.
The third game was a comeback win for the Huskies, who trailed by as many as five points at 22-27. Hadenfeldt knocked down four kills down the stretch including the game-winner, and Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) served out the final points of the UConn comeback as they won the game 31-29.
The fourth game proved less of a challenge for the Huskies, who won by a score of 30-21. UConn recorded a team hitting percentage of .317 in the game compared to Syracuse’s .174. Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) was solid for UConn in the match with 17 kills and a match-high eight blocks. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) kept the Huskies in the game on defense with a match-high 27 digs, and Erbez tallied a match-high 50 assists.
Syracuse was led by Conway with 19 kills, and Christen Casey with 17 digs.
