STORRS, CT (October 22) – No. 22 nationally ranked University of Connecticut men’s soccer team scored six goals en route to a 6-1 win over instate rival Hartford on a chilly Wednesday evening at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Huskies have now won two in a row and improve to 7-6-2 overall, while the Hawks drop to 8-8-1. The last time Connecticut scored six goals in a game was on October 18, 1996, a 6-1 win over West Virginia, when former head coach Joe Morrone was at the helm of the Huskies.
The Huskies had its strongest offensive output this season, notching three goals in the first 45-minutes. So far this season, UConn has not scored more than two goals in a game. Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) got the scoring started at the 20:20 mark of the half. Hartford goalie Ryan Carr went out to make the save and Cuellar kicked the ball past him rolling into the goal. Connecticut went up 2-0 just over four-minutes later (25:05), on Steve Sealy’s (St. James, Trinidad) third goal of the season. Easton Wilson (Hartford, CT), a transfer from Hartford, made a forward pass to Sealy’s foot, he took the shot and Carr pushed the ball back out into the commotion. Sealy shot the rebounded ball for the night’s second score. With 4:24 left in the first stanza, the Huskies took the commanding 3-0 lead. Lindon Pecorelli (LaCrescenta, CA) and Cuellar were involved in a give-and-go situation resulting in the third score. Pecorelli passed the ball to Cuellar at the top center of the box. Cuellar passed forward and left to a running Pecorelli, who shot the ball and fell loose from Carr’s hand and into the net. UHA had two solid chances during the half. The first was early in the half at the 36:36 mark when Alon Lubezky used his speed and surged past the UConn defense, he was one-on-one with Connecticut goalie Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI) who was off his line and about 10-yards out from the goal. Lubesky took the shot over Schuerman who was in a squatted position, with the ball going left of the goal post. With 15:23 remaining on the clock, Gorkem Kaoglu took a hard shot while Schuerman was out of the net, luckily Moshe Shalchon (Rishon Lizioh, Israel) was standing on the goal line and made the kick save out of harm’s way.
Hartford notched a shot on goal at the 19:38 mark of the second half. Kaoglu took a point blank range shot from 15-yards out, as Schuerman bent down and scooped the ball up to preserve the shutout. The shutout was broken at the 72:34 mark of the game. Lubezky took a long shot which went to the left of the goal and Schuerman who was out at the 18-yard mark. Lubezky caught up with his own shot almost at the baseline and took the hard angled kick, which UConn defenseman Glen Caranhan (Broomfield, CO) tried to slide out of the way, but as he slide he missed the ball and it rolled into the net for the Hawks’ first goal, and Lubezky’s 11th of the season. Cuellar brought the score to 3-1 with 12:05 left in regulation on an assist from Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, CA). For Connecticut’s last two goals, Stanley Ford (Liverpool, NY) and Drew Brown (Middletown, CT) were the combination, as Ford notched both goals in a two-minute time span.
Schuerman had two saves in net, while Shalchon recorded one team save. Carr stopped two UConn shots on goal. Connecticut was called for only three fouls, a season low, while UHA was called on 12 times.
Connecticut will travel to Syracuse University on Sunday, October 25, for a BIG EAST game slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
