CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (Oct. 18) - Numerous career-highs were achieved in a five-game thriller which saw the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team (13-10) pull out a 21-19 win in game five to take the win over Texas-Pan American (12-12) at Moody Fieldhouse. Junior Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) set career-highs in both kills and digs with 26 and 24, respectively. Also coming up with outstanding numbers for the Huskies was sophomore Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) with a career-high 24 kills and a match-high hitting percentage of .513.
Only one game of the five was decided by more than three points, as UConn won with scores of 30-28, 30-22, 29-31, 27-30, 21-19. The first game saw UConn lead much of the way, until the Lady Broncs picked up the pace and tied the Huskies six times down the stretch, with the final tie at 27-27. From there, UConn earned three of the final four points on the strength of Hadenfeldt who killed two balls including the game-winner.
The two teams were neck and neck to begin game two, but the Huskies took a lead halfway through which they increased down the stretch. Crawley knocked down seven kills with no errors in the game to pace UConn to the 30-22 win.
Game three was a nail-biter to the end, but with the score knotted at 29-29, an attack error on UConn was followed with the game-winning kill by UT-Pan American’s Jaclyn Muszynski to put the Lady Broncs within one game of the Huskies for the match. UT-Pan American held the lead throughout game four as both teams struggled with hitting errors, and eventually took the game by a score of 30-27.
The fifth game could not have been closer, with neither team gaining the necessary two-point lead after a tie at 15-15 until a Hadenfeldt kill followed by an attack error on the Lady Broncs finally gave UConn the 21-19 win and the 3-2 victory for the match.
Crawley added 11 digs to her 24 kills to achieve a double-double performance, and also notching a double-double was setter Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, FL) with a career-high 69 assists and a career-high 18 digs. Leading the Huskies in digs was senior Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) with a match-high 25.
Cathi Netemeyer led the way for UT-Pan American with 25 kills and 18 digs, and Muszynski also finished with a double-double of 19 kills and 16 digs.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 when they host Miami in a BIG EAST contest at 2:00 p.m.
