STORRS, CT (Oct. 15) - On the strength of Jackie Ahlers who led all players with 20 kills, St. John’s (21-6, 3-2) swept the University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team (11-10, 1-4) by scores of 30-28, 30-24, 30-26. The Huskies, led by Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) with 12 kills, stayed with the Red Storm but were unable to get the final push needed in any of the three games, and ultimately lost their fourth straight BIG EAST match.
St. John’s took an early 6-1 lead in the first game, but UConn came right back to tie the score at 8-8. From there the two teams were neck and neck down the stretch, but two kills from Robyn Kuraski in the final plays of the game, including the game-winner, put the Red Storm ahead in the end. The Huskies out-hit St. John’s .244 to .214 in the game, but Ahlers knocked down nine kills with just one error to pace the Red Storm.
UConn fell behind early in the second game, and trailed the entire way, despite strong play from Megan Crawley (Georgetown, TX) who tallied seven kills and only one error in 11 attempts.
The Huskies again trailed for most of game three, although a late run with kills from Hadenfeldt narrowed the gap. The Red Storm recorded 18 kills in the game to UConn’s 15, including seven from Ahlers in yet another dominating performance.
Leading the defensive effort for St. John’s was Nicole Colaluca with a match-high 14 digs, and setter Erin Poglits recorded 39 assists. UConn’s Jenny Neelands (Gainesville, FL), filling in for an injured Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA), tallied a match-high 41 assists. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) led the Huskies in digs with 12, and Crawley finished the match with 11 kills.
The Huskies will take a break from BIG EAST play this weekend, as they travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, October 17 for a 7:30 p.m. match, and to Texas-Pan American the next day for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
