Connecticut Suffers a 4-0 Loss at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD (October 12) – A penalty-kick was the deciding factor in Maryland’s 4-0 win over the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field in College Park, MD in front of a crowd of 2,373. The Huskies fall to 5-5-2, while Maryland improved to 11-1-0.
The Terrapins took the 1-0 lead on a questionable call inside the UConn defensive goal box. Connecticut’s Mpho Molio (Soweto, South Africa) and Maryland’s Nino Marcantonio charged toward the sideline after a Terrapin throw-in. Moloi and Marcantoni both went down, and Moloi was charged with foul and Maryland was awarded a penalty kick. Marcantonio took the shot into the lower right side of the goal, just inside the post, out of the reach of UConn goalie Adam Schuerman’s (Brrookfield, WI) hands. Connecticut didn’t notch its first shot until 10-minutes left on the clock in the first half. Stephen Arias (Bakersfield, CA) crossed a pass to the opposite side of the goal box, where Yuval Ezer (Netanya, Israel) took a high left footed shot. UConn’s Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) was taken out of the game at the 22:28 mark, after he tangled with a Maryland defender, and tried to get a shot off but in-turn hurt his right ankle. From that point on, for most of the remained of the half, UConn was playing with seven newcomers to the Husky squad this season. By the end of the half, Maryland held the 9-1 shot advantage.
To open the second half, Maryland came right out and notched a goal to go ahead, 2-0. UConn’s Drew Brown (Middletown, CT) miss kicked the ball when attempting to clear it out of the Connecticut defensive half of the field. Jason Garey intercepted the miss kick and shot it from about 20-yards out into the open opposite side of the goal 2:10 into the half. Connecticut took its first shot on goal and second shot of the game, in the 29th minute of the second half. Moloi rocketed a shot from about 40-yards out, with Noah Palmer making the save at the right goal post. Maryland notched two goals in a five-minute time span. At the 21:12 mark Geary surged in front of the Connecticut defense, and went one-on-one with Schuerman for his second goal of the day. At the 17:40 mark, Erwin Diaz scored an unassisted tally to bring the score to 4-0.
Despite the score, Schuerman had four key saves in net, while Palmer was forced only to make one save, and Salvati made no stops. The Terrapins out shot the Huskies, 19-6.
The Huskies will take part in a BIG EAST double-header with the UConn women’s soccer team on Wednesday, October 15 at Morrone Stadium. The women will face Providence at 5:00 pm, while the men will take on St. John’s at 7:30 pm.
