PITTSBURGH, PA (Oct. 10) - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team suffered a four-game defeat at Pittsburgh by scores of 30-19, 28-30, 30-21 and 30-24. The Huskies earned a comeback win in game two after being down 28-25, but the Panthers recovered to take the next two games and the match. UConn drops to 11-8 on the season with the loss, and 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh improves to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in BIG EAST play.
Pittsburgh’s Megan Miller led her team with 27 kills, just one shy of her career-high. Wendy Hatlestad was also strong for the Panthers with 17 kills and a match-high 21 digs.
Accuracy was a weakness for the Huskies, who were out-hit by Pittsburgh in every game of the match. The Panthers also held a significant advantage on the defensive end, recording 75 digs to UConn’s 57, and 10.5 total team blocks to the Huskies’ 4.0. UConn was led by Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) with 16 kills and 11 digs, and Heather Ashley (Smithsburg, MD) chipped in 11 kills. Xaimara Coss (Brooklyn, NY) led the team in digs with 15.
After falling 30-19 in game one, the comeback victory in game two boosted the confidence of the Huskies, who looked strong early in game three. UConn led 20-17 in the game, but after a Pittsburgh time out, the Panthers heated up to take 13 of the next 14 points, and then another win in game four.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Oct.12 when they travel to BIG EAST rival West Virginia for a 2:00 p.m. match.
