UConn Wins Tough Home Opener, 3-2

STORRS, CT (Sept. 6) - The University of Connecticut (2-2) women’s volleyball team defeated the Temple Owls (3-1), 3-2 (30-28, 32-34, 30-27, 21-30, 15-13) in a hard fought five game match, on day one of the IKON Husky Classic at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
Connecticut were led by sophomore Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) who recorded her first double-double of the season with a career high 15 kills and a career high 20 digs. Senior Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA) and junior Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) also posted double-doubles for the Huskies. Wooley recorded 18 kills and a career high 23 digs, while Erbez had a team high 37 assists and 14 digs for their respective double-doubles.
The Huskies as a team recorded 61 kills, 26 blocks and 99 digs in the tough five game match, while Temple recorded 77 kills, 21 blocks and 108 digs.
The Owls were led by Margaret Majewska who recorded a double-double with 23 kills and 19 digs. Three other Temple players posted double-doubles as well. Liu Shu had 14 kills and 16 digs, Xu Yun had 20 kills and 16 digs and Solana Lee had 32 assists and 11 digs for their double-doubles.
In match one of the IKON Husky Classic Sacramento State defeated UW-Milwaukee, 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-11).
UConn returns to action tomorrow at 2:30 and 7:30, when they host UW-Milwaukee and Sacramento State, on day two of the IKON Husky Classic at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
