PRINCETON, NJ (May 19, 2002) -- The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team used two point-scoring performances in the high jump and a school record in the 4x100-meter relay to jump to a 17th-place finish with 19.20 points at the ECAC Championship at Princeton University. Seton Hall won the championship with 82 points.
The Huskies started the day on a strong note, as junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT), junior Antonia Cadore (St. John’s, Grenada), freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) and senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) ran to a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a new school record time of 45.38. The mark broke a seven-year old record of 45.44, set in 1995.
Also notching a second-place finish for UConn on the day was sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ). Mullen recorded an effort of 1.78 meters (5’10”) in the high jump and was followed by teammate junior Lisa Deskis (Broad Brook, CT), who placed in a tie for eighth in the event.
Also in action for UConn on Sunday was junior Andrea Gourdine (Penfield, NY), who finished 11th in the triple jump.
On Saturday, Deskis opened UConn’s point-scoring with a sixth-place performance in the javelin throw.
Both Mullen and Deskis have posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks this season, and the NCAA will announce this week which provisional performances have earned trips to the NCAA Championship, to be held May 29 through June 1 at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. Heading into this weekend, Mullen ranked in a tie for eighth nationally in the high jump with a mark of 1.81 meters (5’11 1/4”) at the New England Championship last weekend while Deskis was 37th in the javelin throw.
For the remainder of the team, the ECAC Championship concludes the 2002 track and field season.
