Huskies Win New England Title

DEDHAM, MA (May 11, 2002) -- Sitting in third-place heading into the final day of competition, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team stormed back to claim the New England Outdoor Championship with 134 points, successfully defending its 2001 title. For the second straight year, UConn has claimed both the indoor and outdoor New England titles. The host school, Northeastern, was second with 95 points.
UConn was paced by five first-place performances on the final day of competition. Leading the way was junior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, CT), who finished first in the discus with a meet and school record throw of 162'3". Also posting a meet record for the Huskies was sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ), who won the high jump with an effort of 5'11 1/4", good for an NCAA-provisional qualifying spot and a ranking of sixth nationally.
Junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) and freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) went 1-2 in the 100-meter hurdles, while junior Amanda Crichlow (Brooklyn, NY) took first place in the 400-meter hurdles. The 4x100-meter relay team rounded out the UConn victories on the day.
Other UConn point-scorers on Saturday included junior Antonia Cadore (St. John's, Grenada) in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, Garner in the 100-meter dash, senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) in the 200-meter dash, Flemmings in the 200-meter dash, sophomore Nicola Hines (Bridgeport, CT) in the 400-meter dash, junior Michelle Carter (Danbury, CT) in the 400-meter dash, sophomore Sarah Casilli (Jamaica Plain, MA) in the 1500-meter run, junior Kelly Joy (Montpelier, VT) in the 3000m steeplechase, junior Lisa Deskis (Broad Brook, CT) in the high jump, junior Andrea Gourdine (Penfield, NY) in the triple jump and freshman Caitlyn Brady (Englewood, CO) in the triple jump.
On Friday, Deskis notched UConn’s highest finish of the day, placing second in the javelin. The 4x800-meter relay team posted a third-place finish while Gourdine was sixth in the triple jump. In late Friday action, senior Lauren Dunning (Toms River, NJ) was fourth in the 10,000-meter run while Parkosewich was sixth in the hammer throw.
UConn’s last meet before the NCAA Championship is next weekend at the ECAC Championship at Princeton University.
