PITTSBURGH, PA (April 15, 2002) - Picking up a game that was suspended after the first inning yesterday because of rain, the University of Connecticut softball team gave up an early 1-0 lead to fall to Pittsburgh, 4-3, Monday afternoon at Lind Field.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 8-25 overall and 2-10 in the BIG EAST, while Pitt moves to 18-26 overall, with a 4-8 mark in the conference.
UConn put a run on the board in each the first, second and seventh innings, but it just wasn’t enough.
In the first, freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) singled to the shortstop, and senior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA) walked, advancing Schettini to second. Sophomore Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA) then reached on an error by the shortstop, which put Girolamo on second and scored Schettini.
Another error by Pitt’s shortstop started off the second inning for the Huskies as junior Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA) reached first. Freshman Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, CT) sacrificed Watrous to second, putting her in scoring position for Schettini, who again singled, this time to right field, to score Watrous.
At that point, the Panthers responded with a run in the bottom of the second, another in the fourth and two more in the sixth to take the lead on the Huskies.
In the top of the seventh, down by two, UConn staged a comeback that fell one run short.
Watrous began the inning off with a double to right field, before freshman Jess Gurney (Williamstown, MA) flew out to center field. Ward then tallied a double of her own, her first of the year, scoring Watrous to pull the Huskies to within one. However, back-to-back groundouts in the next at bats ended the comeback for UConn.
Junior Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) took the loss for the Huskies to fall to 2-11 on the season after coming in at relief for starter Caryn Haskins (Sr., East Freetown, MA). Pitt pitcher Gina Bessolo took the win, moving to 8-9 on the season.
Schettini led the Huskies at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort, including a run and an RBI.
UConn heads to Boston University tomorrow, April 16, for a make-up game with the Terriers. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
