STORRS, CT (March 24, 2002) - The University of Connecticut softball team dropped its first BIG EAST doubleheader of the season Sunday afternoon to Seton Hall at the UConn softball field. The Huskies lost the first game, 5-0, and fell in the second game, 11-4.
In the first game, the Pirates used a three-run third inning to get the game going, then added one each in the sixth and seventh to top it off.
UConn was out-hit by SHU, nine to five, and the Pirates also tallied two doubles on the game.
Five different players tallied UConn’s hits, while Seton Hall was led at the plate by Amy Mellin, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. D’arcy Djakalovic also tallied two hits for the Pirates.
UConn pitcher Barb Cook (Jr., Conklin, NY) took the loss, falling to 3-8 on the season, while Megan Meyer notched the win for SHU to go above .500 at 4-3.
In the second game of the day, the Huskies put themselves on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Pirates answered with three runs in the top of each the third, fifth and sixth innings, and two in the top of the seventh. UConn was only able to respond with one run in each the fourth, fifth and sixth.
In the first, freshman Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) beat out a bunt at first base and was advanced to second when Cook grounded out to the shortstop. Senior Lisa Girolamo then singled to left field to score Campen.
After falling behind, 3-1, after three full innings, UConn put up another run in the fourth when freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) singled to center field, and was brought around by junior Elisa Brinkworth’s (Amherst, NY) double to left center.
In the next half inning, though, SHU used back-to-back homers for three more runs.
Junior Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA) started off the fifth inning with a bunt single, but was forced out at second when freshman Mandy Schettini reached on a fielder’s choice. Campen then singled to right center, moving Schettini to second. They both advanced another base off Cook’s single to left field to load the bases, and Schettini scored when Girolamo was walked during the next at bat.
One final run in the sixth was all UConn could muster, though, when Brinkworth, who reached on an error, eventually scored off a single to left center by Schettini.
Brinkworth led the Huskies at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort, including a double and an RBI, while Girolamo went 1-for-3 with two RBI and Campen went 2-for-3 with a run. Kim Jackson led the Pirates with a 3-for-4 effort, which included a home run, a double and six RBI.
Junior pitcher Claire Hesson picked her seventh loss of the season, while SHU starter Christina Shanko moved to 5-2 and SHU reliever Megan Meyer picked up the save.
The Huskies travel to Boston University on Wednesday, March 27, for a single-game match-up with the Terriers at 4 p.m.
