Huskies Win Third Consecutive New England Indoor Championship

MEDFORD, MA (Feb. 23, 2002) -- For the third consecutive year, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team has claimed the New England Indoor Championship, posting 183 points to outdistance Northeastern, who had 104.
UConn entered the second and final day of competition with a lead over the 43-team field and increased its advantage with four individual victories, including senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) in the 200m. Abrams led four Husky point scorers in the event, placing first with a time of 24.77. Abrams also raced to a second-place finish in the 55m dash.
Senior Nichole Tremblay (Warwick, RI) added her second consecutive New England title in the 1,000m run, outdistancing teammate sophomore Allison McCabe (Reading, MA), who finished second. Rounding out the Husky winners on the track was freshman standout April Garner (Temple Hills, MD), who notched a victory in the 55m hurdles.
UConn tallied multiple point scorers in five track events on Saturday.
Sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) recorded UConn’s lone victory in the field events on Saturday, notching first in the high jump with an effort of 5’8” (1.73m). On Friday, senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) took first in the weight throw with a meet record heave of 62’5 3/4” (19.04m).
Also on Friday, the Huskies posted an impressive victory in the 4x200-meter relay, as Abrams, Garner, junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) and junior Antonia Cadore (St. John's, Grenada) raced to a meet and school record of 1:39.84. The distance medley relay notched a victory on the first day of competition as well.
A select group of UConn athletes will travel to the ECAC Championships next weekend in Boston, MA.
