COLUMBUS, GA (February 22, 2001) – The University of Connecticut softball team struggled against ranked teams in the first day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, GA, Friday.
In the first game of the day, the Huskies fell to No. 8 Arizona State, 4-2, and then were run-ruled by No. 10 Michigan, 9-1.
In the game against ASU, after giving up a home run in the bottom of the second to go down 1-0, the Huskies came back in the top of the third with a solo home run from freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA). In the first at bat of her college career, on her first pitch faced, D’Angelo teed off with a shot over the right field fence to tie up the game.
The Sun Devils didn’t respond in the bottom of the third, but they certainly did in the fourth. ASU tallied three runs on three hits in the inning to take the lead.
The Huskies tried to rally a comeback in the top of the sixth off a pair of Sun Devil errors, but fell two runs short.
Six Huskies each tallied one hit apiece, led by D’Angelo and fellow freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY), who put up a double in her second collegiate at bat.
Phelan Wright led the Sun Devils on a 2-for-3 hitting effort with a double and a home run for one RBI.
Junior pitcher Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) took the loss in her first appearance of the season as the Huskies dropped to 0-1.
In the second game of the day, the Wolverines started the game off by tallying a run in both the first and third innings, but really opened it up in the fifth with three runs, including a two-run homer from Marissa Young. MU capped off the game with four more runs in the top of the sixth off four hits to take a 9-0 lead.
The Huskies were able to muster one run in the bottom of the inning off a Wolverine error, but it was not enough.
Cook scored UConn’s only run on a 1-for-3 hitting effort. Three other Huskies—senior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA), sophomore Jessica Bigos (Fall River, MA) and sophomore Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA)—each had a hit for UConn, while Bigos also tallied an RBI.
Leading the Wolverines was Monica Schock, who went 2-for-2 with a double and five RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) picked up the loss to go to 0-1 on the young season, while the Huskies dropped to 0-2 overall.
The Huskies resume play in the tournament at 10 a.m., Feb. 23, against No. 24 Mississippi State. For more tournament information, see the NFCA website at www.nfca.org.
