UConn Finishes Ninth at BIG EAST Indoor Championship

SYRACUSE, NY (Feb. 17, 2002) -- With 36 points, the University of Connecticut women’s track and field team finished ninth at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship on Sunday at Syracuse University. Notre Dame claimed the team title with 114 points, just edging Georgetown, who recorded 112.
Sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) highlighted the Husky efforts in the final day of competition, recording a personal-best of 5’91/4” in the high jump for second place.
Mullen was one of seven Husky point-scorers on the day as junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) and freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) claimed fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relay team took fifth with 3:52.55 while senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with 25.25. Senior Nichole Tremblay (Warwick, RI) and freshman Caitlyn Brady (Englewood, CO) both notched eighth-place performances in the 1,000-meter run and the triple jump, respectively, to round out the Husky point-scorers.
UConn’s lone individual victory in the meet came on Saturday when senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) scored an NCAA automatic berth in the weight throw with a heave of 64’01/4”. The performance also was a school and meet record.
The Huskies are in action next weekend at the New England Indoor Championship, where they look to defend their 2001 title.
