STORRS, CT (Feb. 15, 2002) -- The University of Connecticut women's track and field team heads to Syracuse, NY, on Feb. 16-17 for the BIG EAST Indoor Championship. The Huskies have never claimed a conference indoor title, despite winning the outdoor competition twice.
The Huskies will be paced by a strong throws duo of senior Wadudah Nurul-Islam (Providence, RI) and junior Amy Parkosewich (Bethlehem, CT). Nurul-Islam is the only former BIG EAST individual champion on this year's team, having captured the past two weight throw competitions in 2000 and 2001. She brings a strong defense in 2002, including the second-best heave in the conference this season, a school record heave of 63'2 3/4" at the Armory Track Invitational last weekend.
Sophomore Deirdre Mullen (Princeton, NJ) looks to replace four-time All-American Tamika Toppin as UConn's big threat in the high jump while senior Sharmaine Abrams (Manchester, CT) and junior Gillian Flemmings (Bridgeport, CT) anchor the short sprints squad. Freshman April Garner (Temple Hills, MD) has been a standout for UConn in the hurdles this season.
Senior Nichole Tremblay (Warwick, RI) and sophomore Sarah Casilli (Jamaica Plain, MA), the school record holder in the mile, headline an improved middle distance squad looking to score points for the Huskies this weekend.
