STORRS, CT (Nov. 19) - The University of Connecticut volleyball team will be making its 21st consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, November 23. UConn is the only team in the conference to have competed in every tournament since the league began hosting the event in 1982. The Huskies will once again face regular season BIG EAST champion Notre Dame in the semifinals at 1:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, PA.
UConn earned a bid to this years tournament on the final day of regular season play with a 3-0 victory over Providence College. The win moved the Huskies into a tie for fourth place with Pittsburgh, but an earlier victory by Connecticut over the Panthers placed them in the four team field.
Notre Dame is making their eighth straight appearance in the tournament and is the two-time defending tournament champion. The Irish defeated UConn 3-0 last year in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament and defeated the Huskies earlier this year 3-1 in South Bend, IN. Notre Dame holds an 11-1 series edge and has a 4-0 lead in BIG EAST Tournament play.
Along with the Huskies and Irish, Virginia Tech and Miami will complete the four team field. The Hokies and Hurricanes will play on Saturday, in the other semifinal at 3:30 p.m. The two winners will then play on Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. for the BIG EAST Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies are 3-0 all-time against Virginia Tech and 0-1 against Miami.
