UConn Downs Pittsburgh, 3-1

STORRS, CT (Oct. 6) - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team defeated Pittsburgh, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The win for UConn was their third straight conference victory and moved their record to 7-9 and 3-1 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh fell to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST.
Game one saw the Huskies push to an early 10-5 lead that they maintained throughout game one to win 30-27. UConn hit .300 as a team and were led by sophomore Brittany Conover (Bargersville, IN) with 5 kills on a .625 hitting percentage.
The second game started out very tight with either team getting an early push. Connecticut then got a late four point push at 26-24, to win game two, 30-24. The Huskies hit well again at .262 and were led by sophomore Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) who recorded six kills on a .600 hitting percentage, while junior Juile Erbez (Stockton, CA) added 16 assists and six digs
Pittsburgh then came out of the intermission and pushed to an early 11-6, lead. UConn never seemed to recover from it and the Panthers pushed three points late to win game three 30-21.
Game four was a game of runs as Connecticut started the match 7-0, but Pittsburgh came right back to tighten the game at 8-7. The Huskies came back and surged forward six points for a 14-7 lead. The Panthers then chipped away before UConn scored the last two points for a 30-25 win. UConn was led by senior Christine Lambert’s (Lancaster, CA) four blocks.
Hadenfeldt led the Huskies with her third straight and seventh double-double of the season. Hadenfeldt tallied 18 kills on a .289 hitting percentage and a team high 15 digs. The Huskies also received outstanding play from Lambert, Conover and Erbez. Conover had a career high 11 kills on a .300 hitting percentage, while Lambert just missed a double double with nine kills and nine blocks. Erbez also had her eighth double-double with 54 assists and 14 digs
The Panthers were led by preseason BIG EAST player of the year Wendy Hatlestad with 20 kills and 12 digs, while Carrie Norris set the game with 54 assists and 11 digs.
Connecticut returns to action on Fri., Oct. 11, at 7:00 pm, when they travel to St. John’s.
