STORRS, CT (October 5) – A natural hat trick by Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) lifted the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team past Georgetown University, 5-1, before a crowd of 5,011 at Morrone Stadium on Saturday night. Winning their fifth straight, the Huskies improved to 8-2-0 overall, 4-1-0 in the BIG EAST. Georgetown dropped its overall record to 4-6-0, 2-3-0 in the league.
Georgetown began the night’s scoring at the 16:27 mark of the first half. Georgetown was awarded a free kick taken 25-yards out. Trevor Goodrich took the shot that sailed into the goal, just inside the right post, out of the reach of the diving UConn keeper Adam Schuerman (Brookfield, WI). UConn countered five-minutes later, for the first of Cuellar’s goals. Andrew McLeod (Kingston, Jamaica) fed a pass into the offensive box to the feet of Cuellar. He shot the ball from five-yards out to the right of the left post. Cuellar then headed the second goal in off a crossed pass from Lindon Pecorelli (La Crescenta, CA) at the 33:36 mark of the half. With 5:56 left on the clock, Cuellar sealed the hat trick, raising the score to 3-1. Leandro de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fed a pass to Cuellar in the offensive box. As the goalie went to make the save, Cuellar stole the ball and shot it into the center of the net.
Connecticut’s fourth goal was notched by Marcus Svensson (Kivek, Sweden), his first of the year. Cuellar was taken down just outside the UConn offensive box at the 66:09 mark of the game. Svensson wrapped the ball around the five-man wall to the left side of the net, out of the reach of the screened Hoya goalie, Tim Hogan. The Huskies capped off the scoring on Damani Ralph’s (Kingston, Jamaica) team leading ninth-goal at the 71:35 mark.
Schuerman played the majority of the game recording one save, while Peter Lechak (West Hartford, CT) saw his first collegiate minutes in net, also making one save. Hogan stopped five shots on goal. Connecticut out shot GU, 30-8. UConn’s bench saw action in the game, as there were no starting players on the field in the last five minutes of the contest.
UConn will play host to Providence College on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 pm at Morrone Stadium.
