Huskies Win Second Straight Conference Match

STORRS, CT (Oct. 4) - The University of Connecticut (6-9, 2-1) women’s volleyball team won its second straight conference match Friday night at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, defeating West Virginia (5-10, 1-2), 3-0 (30-15, 30-25, 30-27).
In game one the Huskies got off to a quick start. UConn pushed four early points from 3-2 to 7-2. Connecticut maintained its lead from there on with one last four point push from 13-7 to 17-7 and finished off the Mountaineers 30-15. The Huskies hit .389 as a team and were led by sophomore Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) with six kills.
The Huskies jumped out to another early lead in game two at 7-3. The game was then back and forth from there as the Huskies won game two 30-25. UConn was led in game two by senior Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA) who recorded six kills and Hadenfeldt with 10 digs.
Game three saw the Mountaineers jump out to an early lead at 5-3. Connecticut came back and eventually took the lead at 12-11. The two teams continue to battle back and forth until West Virginia took a 26-25 lead. UConn then scored five of the next six points to rally from behind and win game three 30-27. The Huskies were led again by Hadenfeldt who had 10 kills on an outstanding .529 hitting percentage.
Connecticut was led tonight by Hadenfeldt who had her second straight and sixth double-double of the season. Hadenfeldt recorded a team high 20 kills on a season high .436 hitting percentage and a team high 22 digs. Junior Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA) also posted her seventh double-double of the season with 49 assists and 11 digs. The Huskies also received a strong performanc from senior Christine Lambert (Lancaster, CA) with 11 kills on a .421 hitting percentage and a team high six blocks.
The Mountaineers were led by Stephanie Zolna with 20 kills on a .341 hitting percentage.
Connecticut returns to action on Sun., Oct. 6, at 2:00 pm, when they continue conference play against Pittsburgh at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
