Huskies Win Second Straight BIG EAST Match

STORRS, CT (Oct. 27) - The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team defeated Georgetown, 3-0, behind a match high 20 kills from senior Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, CA), Sun., Oct. 27, at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The win was UConn’s second straight conference win and moves the Huskies to 10-12 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST, while Georgetown falls to 13-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The Huskies came out hitting and took control of game one early at 12-7. UConn never relinquished the lead as they pushed for a 30-23 game one victory. Wooley led the Huskies in game one with six kills on a .333 hitting percentage.
The second game started the same way as game one as Connecticut pushed out to an early 8-2 lead. The Huskies continued to dominate from there as they closed out game two 30-18. The Huskies as a team hit .447, while Wooley continued her outstanding play with nine kills on a .667 hitting percentage. Sophomore Jamie Hadenfeldt (Benicia, CA) also played well in game two with five kills, six digs and a .400 hitting percentage
Game three started as a back and forth battle until UConn put together a couple of small runs for a 20-14 lead. Georgetown would not go away though, as they came back to tie the game at 23-23 and then again at 28-28. Connecticut then scored the last two points for a 30-28 win.
Wooley finished the match with 20 kills and eight digs with a .368 hitting percentage. The Huskies also received outstanding play from Hadenfeldt, senior Sarah Walton (North Fork, CA) and junior Julie Erbez (Stockton, CA). Hadenfeldt recorded a kill-dig double-double of 14 kills and a match high 15 digs, while Walton added nine kills, two service aces and 12 digs with a .500 hitting percentage. Erbez set the game with 49 assists to go along with six kills, six digs and a .600 hitting percentage.
Georgetown was led by Lauren Warner with 20 kills and Jennifer Ward with 33 assists.
Connecticut returns to BIG EAST action on Fri., Nov. 1, at 7:00 pm, when they travel to Virginia Tech.
